Certified Hatha Yoga Instructor
ABOUT MARIE'S CLASSES:
Marie's classes are conducted in a gentle way and welcome people of all ages and conditions. She uses props to ease the poses for people with limitations. Marie's classes focus on "Pranyama", breath work and on "tuning in". Marie often reminds participants to breathe deeply and slowly and to use breathing as a tool. She also emphasizes the importance of finding repose in each pose, and of bringing awareness and focus into the practice. She often talks about the fine line between effort and surrender. Her classes are designed to bring greater vitality, strength, flexibility and clarity of mind. In her class you will tone, stretch, purify, increase your balance (a skill very valuable for students of all ages), you will improve focus, develop good posture, , invert , challenge your body and also discover its many possibilities when it is paired with a focused mind. You will learn to quiet your thoughts and therefore you will relax more deeply. Marie believes that Yoga is a discipline, a joy and also a therapy. Because of ailments she experienced during the course of her life she has studied how to ease pain with yoga and she loves to tell people the benefits of the poses they are working on and their amazing effects.
ABOUT MARIE BESSO:
Marie's passion for yoga started 30 years ago in France where she was a stage actor with a classical background. She has been practicing yoga since and became a Certified Hatha Yoga Instructor while simultaneously pursuing a 16 -year career as a French teacher for adults and children during which she developed extensive skills in teaching and motivating large groups of people.
Her training in Traditional Hatha Yoga encompasses Yoga Philosophy, Prenatal Yoga, Yoga for kids, Restorative Yoga and Yoga therapy.
Marie's passion for yoga drives her to keep on learning and take on new challenges. Recently she decided to pass on the gift of yoga to the kids and has been teaching children between 5 and 10 years old at Campbell Hall School, Colfax school and Carpenter School for the past 2 years. She also teaches at the other end of the valley at the 360 Heath Club (previously known under Mid Valley Athletic Club), where she was required to take the NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SPORTS AND MEDICINE EXAM.
Through studying for the exam she gained more knowledge in anatomy and biomechanics, and realized the benefits of an in depth knowledge of how the body works and she passes it on to her students.
She currently teaches there to large groups of people up to 45 at a time from age 20 to 75. Marie also teaches classes at a Cancer Support Center for she believes in the wonders of yoga to help patients cope with the emotional and physical stages of the disease and its treatment.
The teachers that inspired Marie the most seem to all have a common point: The B.K.S Iyengar teachings for its precision in the art of alignment. Shosha Bottoms is one of Marie's favorite Teacher. Shosha has guided Marie on the path of yoga since Marie first discovered Angel City Yoga about 15 year ago. Marie keeps on learning with Shosha, feeding from her amazing knowledge, energy, generosity and great spirits.
In addition Marie got the chance to take seminars and workshops from Mrs. Dona Holleman (a leading pioneer yoga teacher in the world, student of Mr. BKS Iyengar) and from Mrs. Maru Donn's exclusive seminar (Also a student of BKS Iyengar and currently running an Iyengar center in New York).
Marie is available to teach private yoga sessions for people with special needs. Her goal is to make a difference in people's life just like yoga has made a tremendous one in hers! She aims at having people leave her classes feeling perfect harmony between their body-mind and spirit, with greater vitality, strength, self confidence and clarity of mind to face the challenges of their day.
Val is a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher, who has been practicing Iyengar Yoga for over 17 years. He is a graduate of the three year teachers training program at the Iyengar Yoga Institute Of Los Angeles, where he apprenticed with the institute's senior teacher, Karin O' Bannon. He has studied with the Iyengar's in Pune India, and brings clarity, sensitivity and maturity to his students.
Stephanie grew up in Chicago, and having a background in modern dance, jazz and ballet, yoga became a natural progression for her, when moving to LA.
Identifying at first, with the physical aspects of the yoga practice, Stephanie began studying Power Yoga or Vinyasa, six years ago, and she received her teacher's training from Mark Blanchard's Power Yoga.
As her practice evolved, she began exploring other styles of yoga, and while finding qualities she was able to appreciate in each of them, she also started realizing that yoga was enriching her life not only in a physical way, but also in a spiritual way.
And, in her teaching today, she strives to help her students gain this awareness for themselves as well.
Stephanie has been teaching at Angel City Yoga for three years and teaches a variety of classes including, "More Challenging Power / Hatha Vinyasa Yoga", "All Levels Yoga", "Gentle Basic Restorative Yoga" and "Pre / Post-Natal Yoga".
She feels that regardless of whatever class she is teaching, her purpose is to create an atmosphere in class which encourages her students to find a safe space to go within themselves, and experience whatever they find here.
While in this "safe space", Stephanie guides her students on a journey that reaches beyond the senses, by focusing on proper alignment in the postures, linking the breath and the postures together, creating a moving meditation, and using music to help create a peaceful and nurturing environment.
Students will find that Stephanie's class is not only a challenging physical workout, but also a total experience as well.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Shosha Bottoms was an avid gymnast in her childhood. She grew up close to the ocean and always felt the importance of being in touch with its natural rhythm, which is very similar to the rhythmic balanced interchange of the breath, the heart beat, and at our deepest core, the rhythm of one's existence.
While studying at Lowell high school, her favorite subjects were Asian Literature, Film, Israeli Dancing and Yoga. During her university years, she worked and studied abroad in Israel which broadened her world perspective. The sea and the Sinai Mountains inspired within her "the true feeling of being alive." She returned to the United States and studied Mythology at the college of Marin and immediately following, traveled to the Philippines to work on Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now," an experience that profoundly affected her global view of humanity. Working on this film, which she considers the privilege of a lifetime, provided her with fascinating, unexpected challenges, each of which helped to mold her as a young, human being.
During this profound life experience, deep in the rain-drenched jungle, Shosha met a young yogi who presented her with a copy of BKS Iyengar's book "Light on Yoga." She immediately began her Yoga self practice with one of the world's most eminent Master Practitioner Teachers. She is profoundly reverent to those early roots. She knows that one moves into the "forest" to seek to know the power within the self. To this day, she continues to study with some of the highest level Iyengar teachers in the world including Manuso Manos, Mary Dunn, Anna Delury, Paul Cabanis. Her practice and method has also been inspired by Indra Devi, Dona Holleman and Vanda Scaravelli.
Upon completion of the film, Shosha married and started a family in Pacific Grove, once again, living by the ocean. While carrying her first daughter, she was reminded of the deep beauty of feeling alive and the exquisite privilege of growing life in the womb. Two years later her family relocated to Los Angeles, CA where she established a home and continued a self practice. Her second daughter was born two years later and it was then, Shosha had the revelation that caring for young life gave her the responsibility to raise her children within the Yogic philosophy and decided to become a yoga teacher. She has immense gratitude her daughters, Io and Clara have continued in the yogic tradition of a daily practice and a devotion to meditation.
Shosha received her Teaching Certification at the Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy, the international Sivananda Yoga Centers in Quebec, Canada. Since then and for the past 18 years, she has been teaching at Angel City Yoga in Studio City, Ca where she has a thriving following for her group classes. Her specialties are Pre and Post Natal, Restorative and Iyengar style yoga. Her daughter, Io, has joined her in teaching at Angel City Yoga.
Shosha practices and teaches yoga because she believes in the experience of "Being Alive." One must master the voyage into the inner life; yoga is the way. She is devoted to her daily personal practice, firmly believing that it is as essential as food, air and water.
Namaste.

Io was born Dec. 8, 1980 in Big Sur,
California, the same hour John Lennon
was assassinated in NYC and Monday
Night Football was airing on the West
coast. Since that dramatic entry into the
world she has taken on an array of forms
and colors amongst the "stars". Her father
actor Sam Bottoms and mother yogini
Shosha were inspired to name their
daughter after one of the moons of Jupiter,
pronounced E-o.
When she was two her family relocated to
Los Angeles where she grew up amidst
the ebb and flow of her fathers' industry
and her mothers' new yoga community.
She excelled as a painter and a modern
dancer during high school. In 1999 she
graduated from Immaculate Heart HS.
In the summer 1999 she was diagnosed
with Hodgkins Lymphoma. That
September she started her college career
at U.C.L.A and as well as a 7 month
protocol of chemo and radiation.
The Angel City Yoga community was an immense support system during this time. During her undergrad at U.C.L.A she worked along side mentors opera director Peter Sellars, Mikhail Baryshnikov and the White Oak Project, Simone Forti, Malerie Marder, David Gere, Shiva Rea, Vic Marks and Paul Cabanis. In 2003 she graduated with a B.A in Dance and Theater.
In 2002, after years of practice she began teaching at Angel City Yoga, Oakwood High School and privately. Her classes are a combination of mediation, Hatha and Iyengar style yoga along with an eclectic mix of old and new tunes.
In the spring of 2005 she went to Paris for 6 months to teach yoga as well as act in Sofia Coppola's Marie-Antoinette.
Today Io continues to act, paint, dance, collect vintage attire and remind oneself to breath! At times she slips into a British accent, but swears her roots are in the California drawl. Among her list of favorites, "Harold and Maude", "Breathless", Catcher in the Rye, Rumi, Nina Simone and Bob Dylan remain. She finds exhilaration on the stage, as well as the commonplace site. In front and behind the camera she delves into many artistic ventures. She believes that the inspiring forces and threads of Art will someday bring peace among nations.
Amber has developed her unique Raj
Vinyasa class over the course of twelve
years predominantly at Angel City Yoga,
drawing on her direct experience
practicing Ashtanga and Iyengar Yoga and
also by observing the needs of her
students. When inspired, Amber also
incorporates some fundamental
teachings of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
This class can be enjoyed by anyone who
desires to build endurance, flexibility and
strength while gaining an understanding of
precision and alignment. Students are
taught Ujjayi breathing which immediately
steadies the mind and facilitates the
synchrony of the breath with the flow of the
postures. Those who attain clarity can
experience the bliss of their True Nature.
Students are encouraged to ask questions
at the beginning and end of class.
All levels can experience Amber’s class,
because she will gently guide you to adapt
the postures and sequences according to
your ability. This is a challenging class from which you can expect to grow on every level. Music is chosen to enhance a range of meditative states.
“My practice improved dramatically after I started attending Amber’s classes…though challenging…I did not feel intimidated. She was encouraging and made me feel welcome…” N.S.
“Her gentle non-invasive style contains an absolute, literal touch of light…I never thought I could incorporate any of the Vinyasa or Iyengar yoga styles into my practice, but without even knowing I was doing it, Amber made me competent. As an educator myself, I know this can only be done by creating a safe, encouraging environment.” B.H.
About Amber
Amber began this lifetime experiencing the smells, tastes, colors and sounds of India, was brought up and educated in England and since 1985 has lived in Los Angeles exploring her soul. She became a U.S. citizen in 2006.
After spending many years studying, meditating, and following her inner promptings, Amber believes that to be enlightened means to take responsibility for one’s life passionately as well as compassionately. With a profound curiosity about the workings of the mind and body, Amber found she could experience total health through yoga. She has been a devoted student of yoga for 35 years, the last 12 years with the best of teachers including Dona Holleman, John Friend, Erich Schiffmann, Richard Freeman and Patricia Walden. She has studied Anatomy, Art, Mythology, Jungian Psychology, Comparative Religions, and is fascinated by the connection of Quantum Physics and Yoga. She loves to dance, sing, paint and draw.
Amber has a deep understanding of the power of our thoughts on our bodies and our lives. She realized that the period at the end of a yoga practice, deep relaxation, was the most powerful time to create the positive changes we desire, through guided meditation. She, therefore, went through an intensive year’s training at HMI to become a Certified Hypnotherapist in order to motivate people to make those positive changes. In addition to teaching yoga, Amber is currently helping people in a wide range of issues including stopping smoking, weight management, overcoming fears, relationship strategies and accomplishing their goals. She sees clients at the HMI clinic.
Amber holds a Masters Degree in Applied Linguistics and Certifications in Yoga, Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and Therapeutic Imagery.
Look out for workshops on Meditation, Breathing and the Power of the Mind.
Amber is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists, American Hypnosis Association and the Hypnotherapists Union AFL-CIO Loc 472, Certification # AL011517.
